Next Steps

  1. Draw nearer to God. Spend quality time in prayer and discernment.

  2. Speak to someone in your church, such as a missions board member, a pastor, deacon, elder, or outreach ministry leader.

  3. Contact people who will pray for you. Ask them to listen to God, on your behalf, and ask God to confirm your calling to missions.

  4. Connect with a missions agency representative. You can contact us, and we can also suggest a few and help you choose from among the many agencies.

What to Know Before Starting Your Missions Journey

Here are some considerations:

The preparation for a “short-term” assignment can take anywhere from 3 to 11 months. The mission agency representatives can tell you about the application process, screening, interviewing, and eventual preparation. The processes may vary by agency.

Mission agencies will ask you about your connection to a local church. We are interested in communities who “send” their missionaries, much more than individuals who act independently.

Some agencies may strongly recommend (or even require) theological education, while others will evaluate your preparedness using other criteria.

Have a general idea of what you want to do, where you want to go, and the length of your commitment, while remaining flexible. The vision will become clearer as you and your community seek God's guidance together.

Questions to Ask a Mission Agency

How long does the application process take?

How much will it cost to “go”? And what are your agency’s policies around fundraising, administrative levies, taxes, insurance?

Do I need to be a pastor or have attended Bible school?

Can I be a professional rather than a preacher?

Can I meet with someone from your agency before deciding to apply?

What should I tell my parents, who are not Christians?
